I often go to the US for SQL conferences, but they are typically in Seattle sometime between October and early April which is not a fantastic time of the year to travel around in that area. However, in 2013 the SQL PASS Summit took place in mid-October in Charlotte, North Carolina, so it seemed like a perfect occasion to combine that with a vacation. I flew into Charlotte three weeks in advance and travelled around in the two Carolinas and Georgia. It was a good trip, but not fantastic. There are plenty of nice nature experiences to make, but cities in the US, well, for a European they do not always have that much charm. I also suffered a set-back: what was intended to be the highlight of the trip, a two-day excursion in the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia was cancelled because of the government shutdown. Then again, that gave me more time to explore the parks in upstate South Carolina, a very nice area.
Below is a summary of the trip with the best pictures, and then there are seven sub-sites with more photos from the different places. (And there is only one picture which are both in the summary and in a sub-site, see if you can spot it!)
