From Atlanta, I went to Greenville which is a very good base to explore the state parks in upstate South Carolina. Originally I had only vague plans for this area, but it seemed worthwhile to explore. And with the government shutdown in mind, it seemed useless to pursue the original idea of going the Great Smoky Mountains. As that is a national park I expected it to be closed.
The train ride from Atlanta to Greenville is only two-three hours, but there was a radical change. The days in Atlanta had been quite warm, up to 28°C, but as I was about to leave Atlanta a tropical storm came in from the Gulf of Mexico, and it was pouring as I crossed the road from the bus stop over to the railway station (and to make it extra fun, there was no direct zebra-crossing, but I had to hop three streets instead of one). The rain passed over Greenville as I was sleeping, and all of a sudden it was autumn as you can tell from the colours in the pictures below.
