According to a guide to one of the houses in Charleston that I visited, Charleston has been ranked as the #1 tourist destination world-wide 2013. The guide did poke fun this himself. "Have they heard or Florence, Paris etc?". And, indeed, I have been many places that has grabbed a bigger piece of my heart than Charleston. Charleston is one of the older cities in the US, and it is absolutely a worthwhile destination. There are certainly some very pretty houses to visit and look at, but Charleston is also marred by the typical US (lack of) city planning. All that said, Charleston does have something to offer that you will not find in Florence or Paris: wildlife. There are several places in greater Charleston that are very well worth visiting and not only for cultural reasons. I went to two of them: the Magnolia Plantation and the Boone Hall Plantation, which both took up the better part of the day.
