In 1856 it became illegal to sell slaves on the streets in Charleston, so instead this business moved indoors. This building once housed one of the biggest slave marts in Charleston. Today it houses a museum which exhibits Charleston's place in the slave trade. This museum is an absolute must when you are in Charleston. It certainly is a disheartening and sobering experience. The reliance of slavery, and holding on to it for so long, is certainly nothing South Carolina can be proud of.
