Ukraine 2014
My vacation 2014 went to Ukraine. Why Ukraine? Isn't there a war going on? Yes, it was wartime, but not all over Ukraine, but only in the lower right corner. And, no, I did not go to Donetsk. See it as an act of solidarity if you like. Being Swedish, I have a certain fondness for the Ukrainian colours. It was a fairly short trip, only ten days. What made this trip valuable was I got to learn more about how the Ukrainians view the conflict, talking with SQL friends that were kind to show me Kiev, Poltava and Lviv and other people that I met (including two that had escaped from Donetsk) So the pictures here do not always focus on the traditional sights, but there are also quite a few that reflect the events that were recent or current at the time I was there.
Below is a summary with the best pictures from the trip, and then there are seven sub-sites:
- Maidan Nezalezhnosti. Independence Square, or simply Maidan, became famous with the Orange Revolution in 2004 and again with the protests in 2013/2014 which eventually led to the downfall of President Yanukovych. (29 pictures)
- Kiev. Kiev outside Maidan, that is. Churches, street pictures, houses, and people. (76 pictures.)
- Mezhyhirya. Yanukovych's private country residence outside Kiev, now open to the public. An orgy in spending (someone else's) money. (72 pictures.)
- Poltava and train pictures. Poltava, where the fatal battle stood in 1709. This suite also includes some pictures taken out the train window. (34 pictures.)
- Lviv. A Habsburg gem in western Ukraine which is the heart of Ukrainian nationalism. (44 pictures.)
- Chernivtsi. One more Habsburg gem, which is, somewhat undeservedly, less famous than Lviv. (39 pictures.)
- Kamyanets-Podilsky. The old town sits on a rocky island in a meandering river and offers both historical and natural sights. (31 pictures.)
