Just north of Kiev is Mezhyhirya. Originally it was the site of a monastery, it was made into a summer residence for Politburo members in the 1930s. Viktor Yanukovych was somehow able to become owner of the place, and spent quite some money on making this a top luxury place. Whether he could afford it? Well, it was not really his own money... After his dismissal, the Ukrainian state retook ownership, and the place is now open for visits, although there is only information available in Ukrainian, and the only buildings to open visits are the sauna and the garage. Walking around in this huge place is a curious combination of a tranquil park area and seeing the result of an outright robbery.
