Iruya is one of these improbable places, that you have to see to believe that they really exist. You take the bus from Humahuaca. For the first 50 km it goes along the paved main road to Bolivia. But then it forks off to a mountain road, which climbs up to 4000 metres above sea level. From there the roads winds down through hair-pin curves, and eventually you are in Iruya. here in the midst of the mountains on an altitude of 2800 m, there lives a couple of thousand people.
My stay in Iruya was short – only two hours before the bus returned, but it was an exciting trip. More pictures from Iruya on the page about Tilcara, Humahuaca and Iruya..
