My destination on that bus from La Serena was Iquique in the north of Chile, some 200 km south of the Peruivan border as the crows flies.
Iquique sits on a narrow strip of land between the sea and the sharply rising coastal mountains (that lead up to a flat plateau). It first became prosperous during the nitrate boom. When that collapsed, the town managed to redefine itself with fishing and other business. Today, tourism is important. The main draw is the beaches, but I used the city as a base for some excursions, presented in the sets that follow. The city still have some buildings from the end of the 19th century, which permits some pleasant strolling.
