Around Shimanto-gawa

This set of pictures is centred around the Shimanto river (gawa in Japanese means river), along which you can find some very nice scenes.

From Uwajima, I left by train on the Yodo line, which is the total antithesis to Shinkansen. It's a local train with only one car and it stops at every station. The great thing with this is that you get time to enjoy the landscape as it goes through the mountains of Shikoku. Part of the railway goes along the upper reaches of Shimanto-gawa.

I finally arrived in small Nakamura, which is some 10 km away from the estuary of Shimanto-gawa. Here I borrowed a bicycle at my hotel, and cycled upstreams along the river for a little while, across a bridge and back on the other side. Quite unexpectedly, this trip turned into one of the absolute highlights of the trip.

From Nakamura, I also made a day excursion to Ashizuri Misaki, the southernmost point of Shikoku to see an important Buddhist temple and enjoy the view over the cliffs.
