Your life may seem predestined, but sometimes it can take an unexpected turn. This is very true for this man. He was born in a poor fishing family close to Ashizuri Misaki in 1827, and there was little reason to believe that he would not also become a fisherman. But then he was stranded on an island far out to sea together with his comrades. They were eventually saved by a ship from the US. Someone took care of John Mung and made sure he got an education. He returned to Japan in 1851, and when Japan opened up to the outside world starting in 1853, John Mung's knowledge made him an important advisor to the shogun.
