There are several older lighthouses along the Outer Banks, and the most famous, and also the tallest is the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. Originally authorised in 1794, this is a replacement from 1870. (The predecessor suffered damages in the Civil War.) The lighthouse has only been in this position since 1999, though. Previously it was closer to the sea, a bit too close to be really safe.
