The next day I drove to the Merchant's Millpond which is a state park. Originally I had planned to visit this park as well as the Great Dismal Swamp further east, but I realised that if I should get any time to really enjoy the nature, I could only make one of them. Merchant's Millpond seemed so strange that my choice fell on this smaller park. And, indeed the pond covered by duckweed leaves a very eerie impression.
