Bran Castle is one of the biggest tourist draws in Transylvania, or tourist trap if you like. It's dramatically perched on a cliff and its coarse appearance invites to fantasies about vampires. Sure enough, the exhibits dwell quite a bit on vampires and Dracula, and it's also a common theme in the souvenir stands. However, the true story is that the castle was built by the Saxons for defence purposes. There is not much connection to Vlad the Impaler here, and the fictive count of Bram Stoker had his castle in northern Transylvania. |
