24. The Protesters

Down on the street there were a couple of people protesting against the verdict from the constitutional court that the recent referendum to oust the President from office was invalid. (85% voted for, but turnout was less than the required 50%.) Our guide had to this point been quite diplomatic and refused to comment various politically loaded statements. But when the referring to this crowd, he made no secret of his opinions. We were told that they had been hired by the government (who were in opposition to the President) and that they were retired officers protecting their privileges.
