Taiyuin Reibyo is the mausoleum after the third Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. It is somewhat more restrained than Tosho-gu (coming later), the mausoleum after his grandfather, which goes over the top. That is not to say Taiyuin Reibyo does not go over the top, because it does as well, if only to a lesser degree. The photo is from one of the first gates, and, as often is the case in Buddhist sancturaries, there is an ugly figure on each side of the gate. |
