7. Village Entrance

Kirishima-jingu is an important Shinto shrine in the Kirishima National Park. It's dedicated to Ninigi-no-mikoto, grandson of sun goddess Amaterasu. He descended to Earth nearby from here, and he is the ancestor of all Japanese emperors.

This torii does not mark the entry to the shrine as such, but it marks the entry to a small village from where you proceed to the shrine.
