During the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603 to 1867, Japan was largely secluded from the rest of the world. The only European power that conducted trade with Japan was the Netherlands, but the Dutch were not free to roam in Japan. Instead, they were confined to the small island of Dejima in the harbour of Nagasaki where they had their own small village. This village has been reconstructed from a model of the place that a Dutch person made in the 1820s. Although, the model we see in the picture is a different and more modern one. (The original model is the Netherlands.) |
