Poltava's claim to fame is the decisive battle that took place here in 1709. This is a painting from the museum the commemorates the battle, where the joint forces of the Swedish king Charles XII and the Ukrainian leader Ivan Mazepa fought against Peter the Great's Russian army who were superior both in number and strategy.
