Road NC-12 leads along the Outer Banks and some 20 km after Nags Head you come to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, of which the most is off-limits to humans. (I guess that is why they call it a wildlife refuge.) At the visitor centre there is a short trail so that you can walk along one of the ponds which are popular with the migrating birds.
