Somerset Place was once of the most profitable plantations in North Carolina. Today it is a bit wayside, but the reconstructed site still merits a visit. Unfortunately, the main building was covered by scaffolding when I was there. On the other hand, maybe these houses outside the fence are more telling: these were the slave quarters. And, like all plantations in the South, the success of the plantation rested solidly on the use of slaves.
