I did not stay long on Ocracoke (I did say that it was a rushed trip, didn't I?), but next morning I took a ferry boat across the wide Pamlico Sound to the mainland, and on the way back to New Bern, I made some inroads into the Croatan National Forest, which covers a vast area from New Bern down to the coast. I stopped at something called Oyster Point and started to walk along a trail in the forest, but turned back to the car already after 500 m or so, since, to be honest, I found it nothing special.
