Walking around in Letea is an experience in itself. To many extents, it's a very remote part of the world. As we have seen, getting here requires one or two boat trips. (There is a bus along the dirt road to Sulina, but once in Sulina you still need to cross the river to get on the hydrofoil.) It's a rural place, and I believe the population is mainly Lipovani, a Russian group that found asylum from persecution in the delta at some point in time. You cannot say that it is a wealthy place, but some of the houses – like this one – look like they have been refurbished very recently, so nor can you say that it is outright poor either. |
