Stewart Island is the third biggest island of New Zealand. There is only one settlement, Oban, on the island and a large part of it is a national park. I went there as a day trip from Invercargill, and it must be admitted that was a little rushed. Not the least when I booked myself on a guided tour to Ulva Island, a smaller island in the vicinity which is free from predators and thus birdlife is better. I only got the time for some short walks in forest areas in the direct vicinity to Oban.
