From Christchurch you can cross the South Island on the TranzAlpine Express, which is more of a tourist train than a regular connection. You get splendid views of the landscape from the train.
I did tihs ride in two steps. That is, I got off at Arthur's Pass village to do some walking in this mountain area. Next day, I continued with the train to Greymouth on the west coast where my rental car was waiting for me.
This is not much text in this set, and I have not even bothered to put titles to most of the pictures. There is only a section header, so you can tell whether the picture is from the train or the walking around Arthur's Pass.
