Christchurch

My starting point on New Zealand was Christchurch, the biggest city on the South Island, and with a direct flight connection to Singapore.

Christchurch is not an amazing place, but I added an extra night here on my itinerary to permit me to recover from the jet lag, before I hit the big adventures.

It's downtown looks devastated, and indeed it is – Christchurch was hit by a series of earthquakes from 2010 to 2012, which hit the city centre badly, and many buildings were taken down as they were beyond chance of repair. Rebuilding has started, but there are many places where construction is going on, and there are also plenty of empty lots.
