North Island runs over the boundary between two tectonic plates and in this area the earth crust is thin and magma heats the water in the ground. There are plentiful of sites where you can see various thermal effects. Wairakei Thermal Valley outside the city of Taupo (on the lake by the same name) is one of the sites that I visited.
