Kiwi is the national bird of New Zealand. In total there are five spieces, of which all count as endangered due to the introduction of predating mammals such as rats and possums. Kiwi are strictly nocturnal, so you would never see one running across the road during the day. Whether it could happen during the night I don't know. I got the impression that they walk around with their beak dipping into the soil to find worms and other creeps to eat. They should find the tarmac quite hard to penetrate.
