One of the absolute highlights on my trip was an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound. In its southermost parts, the west coast of the South Island is jagged by a number of fiords, of which the most famous is Milford Sound, but for various reasons I settled for a cruise on Doubtful Sound. It may be less dramatic than Milford Sound, but it is nevertheless very beautiful. And, as I understand it, Milford Sound can be quite busy, which prevents the experience of stillness of this uninhabited area in the way we could do on Doubtful Sound.
