When proceeding from Rotorua, I opted for the shortest route that Google Maps offered. This proved to be along smaller roads that went through farmlands edged by mountains, offering very nice views. And thanks to the smaller roads, I could drive in a slower pace, permitting me to enjoy the surroundings.
