Curral das Freiras, "The Valley of the Nuns", is a village in a mountain valley. It is a popular destination for day trips from Funchal, and I thought it would be a good destination for a Sunday. I got off the bus at Eira do Serrado which is a couple of hundred metres above the village to take in the views and then do a 4 km walk down to the village. My initial plan was to make this a half-day event, but as I was having lunch, the sun came out and it was too nice to leave, so I stay around and walked to the remote end of the village and back. Which meant a bit of walking since the village climbs along slopes of the valley.
