The biggest attraction in Nikko is Tosho-gu, a shrine that is a memorial for Ieyasu Tokugawa, the shogun that finally restored Japan as a unified state after a long period of internal strife. It is difficult to capture Tosho-gu by mere photos, because it consists a number of buildings, all heavily decorated. For this summary I've only included two pictures on details. The sub-site for Nikko has more pictures. The three moneys that does not hear, see or speak any evil are well-known in the Western world, but also in the Tendai branch of Buddhism. Tendai is one of the major Buddhist sects in Japan. |
