Martina Franca has something that Lecce has not: Trulli. Trulli are cylindrical buildings, usually in white, with grey conical roofs. Trulli are plentyful in this part of Puglia, but not seen elsewhere on the planet. The houses origin from feodal times. They were built like to this to make it easy to move them or bring them down entirely when there was a tax inspection.

On this picture we see some trulli in the foreground. The town on the hilltop in the centre of the picture is probably Alberobello, which is the best the city to go if you want to make a closer inspection of trulli. In Martina Franca there are not so many trulli in the city itself, but only on the surrounding countryside.
