If you go to Argentina, Quilmes is a name that you will see a lot. The story is as follows. Here, in the original Quilmes, there lived Indians that managed to resist the Inka expansion. And in this fortified town the Indians also managed also were able to resist the Spaniards for quite some time. It was not until 1667 the Spaniards took control. The Indians who were living in the town at this time were deported to Buenos Aires, where they ended up in a suburb that they named Quilmes as well. Much later, someone, most likely not any descendant of the Indians, started a brewery in this new Quilmes, and named the beer after the place. And, with the exception of a few local beers, Quilmes is the only domestic beer in Argentina. The beer aside, we can see that this place was an extremely good choice for a fortification, being at the foot of a mountain, and further pictures will show this even more. |
