6. The Petrified Forest

This may look like a log from a tree, and indeed it is. Except that the material is not wood, but stone. The tree that originally stood was buried in the outbursts from a vulcano many million years ago. As water rich of silicates ran through the ash and lava, stones formed from the tree trunks, and today you can see these amazing stones in Los Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo. This was a place I wanted to see on my first trip to Argentina, but then I could not figure out a way to easily get to the site.
