Valdivia is a university town which sits on a confluence quite close to the coast, some 150-200 km away from Puerto Montt. Compared to Puerto Montt, Valdiva is prettier and calmer, and it has quite a nice waterfront.
As we shall see in the pictures, it also has some nice older houses, although most houses are modern. And the city should not be blamed too much for this. After all, Valdivia appears in the book of records for a violent event that took place on May 21st, 1960: to wit, the strongest earthquake ever registered (9.4 to 9.6 on the Richter scale) occurred in the sea outside Valdivia, and the city took a toll and gave name to the earthquake.
My main activity in town was to take a boat ride on the river to some places where the rivers reaches the sea and where there are some fortresses. Compared to the previous boat, this boat trip was not equally fantastic. Then again, compared to a January day in Stockholm, it was heaven. Wihle the surroundings are not as stunning as in Lago Todo los Santos, they are still very nice. And – no horse flies!
