Petrohué is about 60 km east of Puerto Varas and it is not a big place at all. At the end of the road, there is only a lodge and a pier from where a lot of boats leave. On the other side of the river and lake shore there are some houses, though. There is no road on that side – they are dependent on boats for contacts with the outside world.
Petrohué is not on Lago Llanquihue, but on a lake called Lago Todo los Santos which empties into Río Petrohué. A few km downstream, this river has some spectacular falls, Saltos de Petrohué.
I stayed at the lodge for one night. It was a very nice place, even if it was a tad expensive. On the way to the lodge, I stopped by at the falls which were nice, but it was a little crowded. Once at the lodge, I went on a walk on the lower reaches of Volcán Osorno. When the path turned back, I sneaked down to the beach, and I had my first swim for this year – wonderful! The set includes pictures from the falls as well as this walk on this quite hot day.
