My aim with coming to Puerto Natales this time was The Big Adventure. That is, long before I left home I had booked a trip with the Navimag ferry Evangelista going from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt, which, as the crows flies, is over 1100 km further north. What made this trip so exciting is that a large part runs in narrow channels in totally uninhabited areas. That is, this is a chance to see nature that cannot be seen in any other way.
This may sound like a cruise, and it both is and is not. The main business for Navimag is to transport goods between these two places, but they also take passengers and they have understood to treat their tourists well. The staff includes a guide that gave us daily lectures and sometimes called us out when there was some wildlife like whales to watch.
So was this a most fantastic trip? Both yes and no. Admittedly, after half a day, there was a realisiation that it was all the same, although it was always thrill to stand on deck spotting birds or sea-life. And, let it be said: the weather could have been better. Then again, this is a very wet part of the world, so rain was certainly expected.
We embarked the ship already late Monday evening, although the ship did not sail until Tuesday morning. The first day offered a mix of sunshine and rain. The second day was entirely overcast and rain for a good deal part of the day. The third day had hardly any rain, although it was mainly overcast. Friday morning we landed in Puerto Montt. It was windy most of the time.
Many of the pictures are without name or comments. Because of the weather conditions, many pictures are grey and dimmed. I have permitted myself to post-process a few to increase the contrast radically.
