52. Inside Alexander Nevsky

                 Back Main page Fwd

You may ask what place Alexander Nevsky has in Bulgarian history and the answer is none at all. As a young man he was the prince of Novgorod and fought off two incursions from the west, by Swedes in 1240 and by Teutonic Nights in 1243, which earned him as a name as a Russian national hero. Nevermind that he later as the Grand Duke of Vladimir willingly cooperated with the Golden Horde and help them to tax the Novgordians to the bone.

The church was built in gratitude over the help that Bulgarians got from Russia when they fought their war of independence. Still, the name feels very out of place.
