I did not expect to see much of Islam in Taiwan, but already on the first day, I saw a lot of women wearing hijabs sitting in groups on the floor of the main hall in the railway station sharing a meal, and I saw such groups in the parks as well. And in several places all over Taiwan I saw signs for "Muslim Prayer Room" and, like here, "Muslim Friendly Toilet". I learn from Wikipedia that Muslims account for 3 % of the population in Taiwan. And while many of them may be recent immigrants from countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, there are also Chinese Muslims hailing from the Qing area. It seems that Taiwan wants to treat their Muslim minority well. (So what is a Muslim-friendly toilet? I am not sure. This toilet was a plain sit-down toilet, but keep in mind that squat toilets are common in East Asia, and they may not count as Muslim friendly.) |
