Chiang Kai-shek certainly earns his place in the history of Taiwan. Originally, the leader of mainland China, he also became ruler of Taiwan in 1945, when Japanese occupation of Taiwan came to an end. Four years later, the communists under Mao took over the mainland, but Chiang Kai-shek and his administration escaped to Taiwan where he ruled to his death in 1975. Let's make it clear, he was a dictator with all that comes with it. But at the same time, he was instrumental in the development to where Taiwan is now. His memorial hall is an imposing building surrounded by an elegant plaza lined by other buildings in traditional Chinese style, although everything was built in the eighties. |
