Kotohira is a small town on the northeast of Shikoku where I stopped by for a few hours on my way to Takamatsu. The attraction here is the venerable shrine Kotohira-gu, also known as Kompira-san.
It seems that originally it was shared between Buddhism and Shinto, but today it is Shinto only. To reach the innermost altar, you need to climb no less than 1368 steps, although many visitors let it suffice with the 803 steps that lead to Hon-gu, the main shrine in the complex.
The shrine seems to be particularly dedicated to seafarers, which is a little funny, since Kotohira is not on any coast.
