During the Tokugawa shogunate, Netherlands was the only European power to trade with Japan. The Dutch were not permitted to roam all over Japan, but they were confined to the small island of Deijma in Nagasaki harbour. Today, after various land fills, Dejima is on mainland. But the area has been reconstructed to show how it looked like around 1820. At that time, a Dutchman who lived in Dejima for a while, made a detailed model of the place. He brought the model back to the Netherlands, where it still is, but the city of Nagasaki could work from this model to set up this museum version of Dejima. |
