The high-speed train Shinkansen is Japan at its best. On my trip in 2009, almost all my long-distance train travel was with Shinkansen, because it was so convenient. On this trip, my Shinkansen rides were more occasional, since I travelled to places not covered by Shinkansen. (Yet. They are still extending the network.)
