I was in Oslo for a Data Saturday, and I had a few hours to walk around the city. This statue is in the front of the Royal Castle. I found it a little odd that this king would get such a prominent position. After all, as the Crown Prince of Sweden he lead the attack that quenched Norway's attempt to be independent in 1814, and forced Norway into a union with Sweden. (That lasted until 1905.) The text on the statue reads Folkets kjærlighed, min belønning (The love the people, my reward), his motto. |
