The full name for this area is Kyevo-Pecherska Lavra. A lavra is a senior monastery and pecherska means "of the caves". The area is packed with churches, but it does not stop there: below some of the churches there are also caves dug out by the earliest monks in the 11th century to retreat from the world outside. They were buried in the caves, and their relics remain, making this the top destination for pilgrims from all over the East Slavic world. The area falls in two parts, the Upper and Lower Lavra. The Upper Lavra not only sports churches, but also a couple of museums of quite a worldly nature, for instance the remarkable museum of micro-miniature where you need to use a microscope to see the exhibits. This is just on the inside to the main entrance to the Lavra from the street. |
