This monument commemorates the union of the Russian and Ukrainian nations that arose in 1654. The Cossacks under the leadership of Bohdan Khmelnytsky revolted against their Polish overloads, and found an ally in Muscovite Russia. But their quest for autonomy did only take them to another overlord. And fat later, this ugly monument.
