On the way to the power plant, we left the main road for a detour to the abandoned Duga Radar station. This was a radar system the Soviet Union used as early-warning system which tried to detect if someone was shooting up any evil missiles. Due to the signal it sent out on the shortwave band it was nicknamed the Russian Woodpecker by radio amateurs. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the site no longer filled any purpose, and given the vicinity to the disaster area, it might have been in decay already then.
