The power plant got its name from the only town nearby. Chornobyl (as it's spelled in Ukrainian; Chernobyl is Russian), is known since the end of the 12th century, although there are not much traces of that long history. The city is some 15 km from the power plant. The town was evacuated after disaster, and as I understood it, there is no resident population here. However, there are dormitories here for the people who work at the power plant to construct the new sarcophagus (more about this later) and who stay 15 days at a time. There is also a hotel and a restaurant here (where we had a very late lunch).
