A detail on a building that is part of a Buddhist temple in East Kyoto. This is not one of the big sights, but just a temple I happen to pass by. The structure of the differently coloured pieces of wood is fairly typical. About 60 million people in Japan adhere to Buddhism, and Buddhist sects have had a big influence in Japan through history. Since neither Shinto nor Buddhism claim monopoly with regards to religion, there is no contradiction in following both of them. |
