In the heart of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace. It is not open for the public, but two days around New Year (and by guided tours that you must apply for in advance), and in that way it creates a big hole in centre of the city. Between the palace and Tokyo station there is a big open space, known as the Imperial Plaza. That seemed like a good start for exploring Tokyo. In the back skyscrapers in modern Tokyo.
